Connect your BackNine account to the AI assistant you already use, then ask about cases, applications, appointments, and quotes in plain English.
▶ Watch: BackNine in 5: Connect BackNine to Your AI Assistant (3 min)
You can connect BackNine to ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, or Grok and work with BOSS and Quote & Apply by asking questions in plain English.
Instead of clicking through screens, you can ask:
-
“How many pending cases do I have?”
-
“Which of my cases need attention?”
-
“I need a life insurance quote.”
The assistant uses the BackNine tools your account has access to. If it needs more information, it asks before it runs anything.
What you’re connecting
BackNine runs an MCP (Model Context Protocol) server. MCP is a standard way for an AI assistant to use another system’s tools. You don’t need an API key or any technical setup.
- You sign in with your own BackNine login and approve the connection.
- The assistant can only see what you can already see in BackNine. Connecting doesn’t give you access to any case, application, or appointment you couldn’t open before.
- HIPAA-protected data is removed from BackNine’s responses before they reach the assistant.
The connection URL
Every assistant uses the same URL:
https://app.back9ins.com/api/v1/mcp/tools
Step 1: Add BackNine to your assistant
Pick the assistant you use. The steps are similar for all four: add a custom connection, name it BackNine, paste the URL, and sign in.
ChatGPT (on the web, at chatgpt.com)
-
In the left sidebar, open Plugins.
-
Click Add in the top right, then Add a custom MCP server.
-
Name it BackNine and paste the connection URL.
-
Click Create as a plugin.
Custom connections need a paid ChatGPT plan, and on Business or Enterprise your workspace admin may need to allow them. ChatGPT renames these menus from time to time. If you don’t see Plugins, look under Settings → Apps.
Claude (at claude.ai or in the desktop app)
-
Go to Customize → Connectors.
-
Click Add, then Add custom connector.
-
Name it BackNine, paste the connection URL, and click Continue.
-
Leave the sign-in settings at their defaults and click Add.
On a Claude Team or Enterprise plan, an owner adds the connector for the whole organization. Each person then clicks Connect and signs in with their own BackNine login.
Gemini (on the web, at gemini.google.com)
-
Open Settings, then Connected apps.
-
Under Custom apps, add a new app.
-
Paste the connection URL and continue.
Grok (at grok.com)
-
Go to grok.com/connectors.
-
Click New Connector, then Custom.
-
Paste the connection URL.
Step 2: Sign in to BackNine
The assistant sends you to a BackNine sign-in page. Log in, review the access it’s asking for, and click approve. You only do this once.
Step 3: Ask a question
Open a new chat and make sure BackNine is turned on for that chat. In ChatGPT and Claude, it’s in the + menu next to the message box.
Then ask for what you need. You don’t need any special commands.
Your book of business
-
“How many pending cases do I have?”
-
“Which of my cases need attention?”
-
“What’s the status of the [Client Last Name] case?”
-
“Show me my electronic applications.”
-
“Am I appointed with [Carrier]?”
Quotes and applications
-
“I need a life insurance quote.”
-
“Quote $500,000 of 20-year term for a client.”
-
“Start an application for this quote and email it to the client.”
If you leave something out, the assistant asks for it. For a quote, that usually means age, state, gender, nicotine use, height and weight, health, and the coverage amount and term.
Before you use it on a live case
- What you type goes to the AI company. BackNine removes HIPAA-protected data from its own responses, but anything you type into the chat (client names, health details) is sent to the assistant’s provider. Follow your agency’s policy on entering client information into AI tools.
- Check before anything goes to a client. Before the assistant starts an application or emails a client, confirm the client’s name, email, product, and amount.
- The rules are the same as in BOSS. Rate classes still depend on underwriting, and no-exam options are still decided by the carrier. Don’t promise a client anything the assistant shows you until the carrier confirms it.
Don’t see the option to add a custom connection?
Most of the time it’s one of two things: the plan you’re on doesn’t include custom connections, or your company’s admin has them turned off. Ask your admin, or use Schedule a Meeting and we’ll walk through it with you.
BackNine’s official ChatGPT and Claude apps are awaiting approval. Once they’re live, setup will be quicker: find BackNine in the app directory and sign in. Everything after sign-in stays the same.
Already with BackNine? Connect it now, then ask: “How many pending cases do I have?” If you get stuck, use Schedule a Meeting and we’ll connect it with you.
