What is an Impaired Risk Quote and why should I use it?

Every agent has had the client who doesn’t fit the standard mold: a history of diabetes, a past cardiac event, a family history that makes underwriters squint. The instinct is to pick a carrier you know and hope for the best, but carriers differ widely in how they treat the same condition. One may rate a well-controlled case at Table 2 while another offers Standard.

An Impaired Risk Quote in BOSS takes the guesswork out of that. You enter the specifics of your client’s health history, such as the diagnosis, how long ago it occurred, treatment, and current readings, and BOSS shops the case across multiple carriers at once, returning estimated rate classes side by side.

The “why” comes down to time, trust, and outcomes. Instead of cold-calling underwriters or submitting a full application to find out where a client lands, you get a market-wide view before the client commits to anything.

That means fewer surprises, fewer declines, and a stronger case when you sit down with your client to explain their options. It also protects your credibility. When you can say, “I looked at the market and this is the best class available for your situation,” you are advising rather than guessing.

Better placement means more closed cases, and since compensation is tied to closed cases, the time you spend upfront pays off.

To submit one, log in to BOSS, open the Impaired Risk Quote feature, and enter the client’s details as completely and accurately as you can.

The more specific you are, the more reliable the estimates. Once results come back, compare the carriers, and if you want a second set of eyes, our pre-sales and advanced case design teams are ready to help.

From there, you can move straight into Quote&Apply to build the illustration and start the eApp with the carrier that fits best.
